Ref-Chem is committed first and foremost to a safe and healthy work environment. Our safety record places Ref-Chem in the top echelon of engineering, construction, and maintenance companies in the United States. To that end, we have trained our field management personnel in the recognition, avoidance and prevention of conditions and behaviors that lead to accidents.
Ref-Chem has implemented several proactive plans and Best Practices that have improved our safety performance and results.
Proactive Plans and Best Practices
- Short Service Employee (SSE)
- Short Service Employees (SSE) – Employee with less than 6 months of experience or 1 year in the same industry.
- SSE receives special safety orientation.
- On-site supervisor assigns a mentor to train SSE for at least 6 months or until SSE proves competent in safety rules and guidelines.
- Safety Task Analysis (STA)
- STA’s are written plans produced by assigned crews to review, plan and document the task at hand each day prior to starting work.
- Every employee must
- understand the task
- be aware of the hazards
- learn to mitigate the hazards
- revisit STA plans every few hours as conditions may have changed
- Behavioral Based Safety
- The Behavior Based Safety Program is intended to enable RCLP employees to report and record safety observations, most importantly stopping work that is unsafe.
- Data is reviewed weekly at the job site and updated by corporate safety for review by upper management
- Involves employees and subcontractors
- Gather and Trend Data Regularly (Intra-net based)
- Increases Hazard Recognition
- Enhances Reporting (Employees feel free to share information on hazards)
- Number One Message – All employees have the obligation to recognize and stop work that is unsafe!
- ‘Push-Back’ is expected of employees if given unsafe direction by their superiors or clients
- Implementation of the mandatory job site audit

- Utilizes a routine internal audit form for managements use to monitor:
- Contract Management Controls
- (Consistent execution of RCLP projects)
We provide essential safety training as prescribed in OSHA Process Safety Management Guidelines, which includes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Training and HAZCOM Training. PPE and HAZCOM training are part of our new-hire orientation, which is required before any employee is allowed to work in the field. All employees are informed of their responsibilities and rights under OSHA Process Safety Management guidelines.
Essential Elements of Our Safety Process

- Third party special safety training for all new hires as required
- Formal Substance and Alcohol Abuse Policy – new hire, random, for cause
- Full-time Safety Representative on all projects as required by policy

- Daily safety meeting and safety task analysis performed on every job
- Site safety assessments by Safety and Loss Prevention professionals
- Required safety observations and hazard recognitions completed by all employees

- Short service employee policy to mentor and oversee new Ref-Chem employees
